A huge announcement came today from the Formula DRIFT offices announcing that in addition to the expansion of Formula D into having a PRO2 series they will also be adding a Formula D Japan series. They have teamed up with MSC Co, Ltd and signed a 3-year deal starting in 2014.
Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT had this to say, It’s very exciting to be taking our brand to the birthplace of drifting with MSC. MSC is a reputable company that has been involved in drifting for many years. We feel that this is a great way to expand our brand as it fits with our global aspirations”
Formula D Japan is scheduled to fully start in 2015 with minimum of 4 events to comprise it’s own FD Japan Championship in addition to the current FD Asia and FD US Championships. Two judges for this series will include drifting icons such as Nobuteru Taniguchi and Max Orido, baring no conflicts with racing commitments. One of the Japan events will be dually considered part of the FD Asia series awarding points for that championship as well.
Although the official Formula D Japan series will not start until 2015 you can expect to see two per-cursor events held in Japan during 2014 to help launch the series as well as give us a preview of what’s in store.
More details of the series will be announced at the official launch during the 2014 Osaka Auto Messe in February.
